This program will be presented in Yiddish, English, Hebrew and Ladino

“Live & be well”. Shirlee Todd and Eddy Patay have reached into the vast treasure of Yiddish music and song to afford you glimpses into the joys and daily life of the shtetl, the waves of immigration after the pogroms, and the exodus of survivors after the holocaust. The music follows two groups leaving their homes in Eastern Europe and Spain-one group heading to America and one group heading to Israel.

ABI GEZUNT is a showcase of Yiddish music, poetry and story. It captures the everlasting zest for life of a people. Whether here in America, in Israel or everywhere in the global Diaspora –Jews wish upon each other what they treasure most—health and a good life—Live and Be Well! Abi Gezunt !

Chicago Klezmer Ensemble October 5  • 2 pm
“So much sloppy and stylistically unauthentic performance has been passed off as klezmer music in recent years that one sometimes wonders whether this historic genre can survive the onslaught.
Even if it can, the proliferation of inferior bands would seem likely to distort listeners’ expectations of how klezmer music ought to sound.
As if to address these problems head-on, the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble played a sterling performance over the weekend that did more than avoid the usual klezmer clichés. ”Howard Reich - Tribune Arts Critic
